Overview

In an effort to provide the first coherent theory of sexual orientation in the tradition of analytical psychology, Robert Hopcke examines the way in which Jung and Jungians have regarded homosexuality both clinically and theoretically, demonstrating that within a great diversity of opinion there exist many ways to deepen an understanding of the lives and loves of gay men and lesbians. Hopcke proposes a view of homosexuality that is archetypally based, empirically supportable, psychologically profound, and spiritually evocative.

"""This is a Jungian book about homosexuality that insults neither the heart nor the head. It clears away the heterosexist assumptions at the core of classical analytical psychology to make room for the kind of emphatic understanding Jung really wanted to bring to every human experience."" John Beebe, Editor, San Francisco Jung Institute Library Journal ""Robert Hopcke's revolutionary book overthrows traditional Jungian thinking about gay people and proclaims a new vision. With lucid thinking and vivid imagery, he portrays an authentic gay individuation, leading to psychological wholeness."" Mitch Walker, The Advocate ""A wonderful and important book! Hopcke carefully examines and contextualizes all the passages in Jung's Collected Works relevant to our understanding the real limitations and as yet unappreciated strengths of Jung's reflections on homosexuality."" Christine Downing, author of Myths and Mysteries of Same-Sex Love"
