Overview

"Journey to the Inner Light: The Life and Musical Voyage of Jay Chattaway, Star Trek, Jazz, and Film Composer is the story of the twentieth-century Emmy Award-winning American composer behind the scores of hundreds of beloved Star Trek television episodes. Jay rose from humble beginnings in southwestern Pennsylvania, where he grew up along the banks of the Monongahela River, simultaneously discovering his talent for music and his love of the open water. This passion for the aquatic-seen in his naval career and his adventures sailing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans-blends seamlessly with his passion for composing original compositions and film scores. In Journey to the Inner Light, the author celebrates Jay's successes and, at the same time, reveals some of the challenges he faces as he moves through five decades of the music industry. She also opens a window into his private life for a three-dimensional portrait. Additionally, Journey to the Inner Light explores the creative process as Jay attempts to answer the question most asked of him: ""Where does the music come from?"""

Reviews

"""Journey to the Inner Light is a detailed, entertaining, and hugely informative look at the life and career of composer and yachtsman Jay Chattaway...It's a book for anyone who loves movies, movie music, Star Trek, and sailing."" - Jeff Bond, Author of The Music of Star Trek ""The narrative's excitement is in its behind-the-scenes portrait of the work itself...illuminating and intriguing..."" - Kirkus Reviews ""Having loved Jay Chattaway's music for 35 years, it is a joy to experience his full life story. Terri's book chronicles Jay's many accomplishments as an artist but does an even better job expressing the kindness and humor of a good man."" - Lukas Kendall, Film Score Monthly ""Jay Chattaway, best known as a film composer, notably scoring music for the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise series of television's Star Trek for sixteen years (1987-2005), has illuminated his life with this thorough, fascinating, and enduring biography. The myriad of film music compositions that began in 1980 and ran through 2008 may have been the touchstone of Jay's musical challenges and accomplishments but are only a part of Jay's broad musical world. With Journey to the Inner Light, authored by his lovely wife, Terri Potts-Chattaway, Jay beams down a fascinating voyage of achievements and passions that began with his early family life, young Navy Years, discovering jazz music, the Record Business, and a new career in scoring film and television music, to personal changes and a new companion, lifelong friendships made, sailing the high seas, and much more. Journey to the Inner Light is an illuminating examination of the voyages and frontiers where Jay Chattaway, with his friends and family, has boldly gone in this life and its musical, lifelong journey!"" - Randall D. Larson, Author of Musique Fantastique ""Terri Potts-Chattaway chronicles so many fascinating stories in Jay's remarkable life. More than a family memoir, Journey to the Inner Light is a rare behind-the-scenes look at the film and TV industry, and the critical importance of music to the productions we all know and love."" - Elisa M. Speranza, Author of The Italian Prisoner ""Far from being a dry factual recounting of events and curriculum vitae that many biographical works often present as, the author uses a conversational storytelling tone to share an intimately personal look at the composer...The final section brings us back to the masterpiece that is ""The Inner Light"". This part of the book is where we see the poetic soul of the author take centre stage, as she puts to words the essence of the music that has made it so iconic, accessible and profound as to become a career-defining piece in a body of many amazing works."" - Eve Zellick, WarpFactorTrek.com"
