OverviewThis is the journal of the early life of a soldier who was a prisoner of war in Germany during the first world war. It begins in 1895, when his father died leaving a widow and several children, including a young baby. It is written by William himself; I have only transcribed it and added some photographs. The rest is all his own work, complete with spelling a grammatical errors. I believe his mention of his wife being ill and the doctor telling him if she did not marry, she would die, refers to the old fashioned belief that an unmarried woman suffered from something called female hysteria. This is my own interpretation of that cryptic passage; the reader might find another. This journal tells of William's service in the army, his 200 miles walk from London to Wales to find work, and his experience as a prisoner of war in Germany.
