Moses (Moyses) Baruch Auerbach was born in Nordstetten (now Horb am Neckar), Kingdom of W rttemberg. He attended the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium. He was supposed to be a minister, but after studying philosophy in T bingen, Munich, and Heidelberg, and growing distanced from Jewish orthodoxy through Spinoza's work, he turned to literature.
