He graduated from Cambridge University in 1967. He moved to Norway in 1976 and after a couple of years in Trondheim he settled Bergen working the department of Neurosurgery at Haukeland University Hospital. In 1988 Dr. Ganz became involved in Gamma Knife Neurosurgery at an early stage of this new technology and has been heavily involved in its teaching across the Globe. He has published four books on the subject. Following retirement in 2011 Dr. Ganz visited Shantou University Medical College to teach neurology for one year. On returning to England he has undertaken research into the history of neurosurgery; some of which effort has involved the application of new methods of analysis of historical surgical series. So far he has had fourteen publications accepted. The current book arises out of PhD studies where Dr Ganz had become aware of the work of James Hill from Dumfries who appeared to be a surgeon of outstanding excellence, whose contributions, forgotten since the end of the nineteenth century, deserve to be remembered and studied. Privately, Dr. Ganz was once a keen cricketer and also for five years an assistant church organist. He enjoys classical music, travelling and good food.
