Overview

Based on work in the anxiety-provoking and emotional environment of professional football, this book explores the effect that emotions have on the relationships and relatedness of team members; and, the struggles experienced in controlling and managing emotions by leaders and managers of teams. More specifically, this book explores the conflicts associated with the process of managing the boundary between what is inside and what is outside: between what is in the manager's mind and what is happening in the external environment.

Reviews

'Anyone interested in the psychodynamics of leadership and what it takes to lead competitive teams effectively will benefit from reading this book. Lionel Stapley has constructed an articulate framework for understanding the emotional challenges leaders face in the passionate world of football. His observations and lessons for future leaders and consultants are rooted in experience and what Daniel Goleman calls emotional intelligence . If you are interested in learning about the world of psychodynamically oriented consultancy and coaching, this book is for you.' - Professor Michael A. Diamond, Director, Center for the Study of Organizational Change, University of Missouri. Essentially, this is a book for managers and leaders of teams at all levels of organisations and institutions, be they Chief Executives who are leading senior management teams; middle or junior managers who are heading up work teams; or, project managers who are heading up less permanent teams. More than this, though, it is a book for all those many interested and sophisticated members of teams everywhere, who are interested in the sort of management and leadership that they could not perhaps espouse but will know and admire when they get it. Author Biography: Lionel Stapley PhD is an organizational consultant and the Director of OPUS (An Organisation for Promoting Understanding of Society) an educational charity that seeks to encourage the study of conscious and unconscious processes in society and institutions within it. He is also a member of the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CFIPD), and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management (FCIM).
