Overview

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives- the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I ll shut up about it? Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you ve come to the right book, mostly! In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door not so much

Monica writes: On the first page of the first chapter, you will find a list of alternative titles for this book by Mindy Kaling, they include... "Sometimes you just have to put on lip gloss and pretend to be psyched" and "I've finished reading Tina Fey's Book, Now What?"... And suddenly the standard for the whole book is set. It is Hilarious, Inspiring, Charming and will make you wish that Mindy Kaling was your best friend. If you have heard of Mindy, it's probably from her current TV Show ""The Mindy Project" or her work as one of the Head Writers on "The Office". What you probably WOULDN'T know is that she got discovered whilst playing Ben Affleck in the Fringe play "Matt & Ben" the first show she ever wrote. That entertaining story and more can be found in this great collection of essays .On the surface it can read as a light hearted memoir about a female comedian who has risen to the top of the television industry; however this book is also an honest tale about Family, Feminism and show business. Her chapters about her awkward school years are particularly enjoyable and unfortunately, relatable. Whilst it is a book for adults, it's also a great one for teenagers. Mindy Kaling is a great role model for young women as she talks a lot about just being who are and coming into your own when you are ready. Basically it's a great read for anyone loves or needs a great laugh!

Like listening to a likably gabby friend chatter happily over generously poured glasses of red wine. -Washington Post [Kaling's] comedic chops certainly shine throughout the book-as if we need more proof of her talent. -HuffPost Kaling doles out neurotic charm and hilarious every-woman musings. -Elle She's like Tina Fey's cool little sister. (And Other Concerns) is hilarious and relatable-just like Kaling's classic Tweets. -Ladies Home Journal
