He served in strike craft from 1975 until 1984 and later in Military Intelligence during the closing stages of the war. He retired from the Navy in 2006 and is involved in the study and recording of naval/ military history. Douw Steyn served for 19 years as a Special Forces operator in 1 and 4 Reconnaissance Regiments. He was awarded the HC in 1975. He is also the co-author of Iron First From the Sea.
