Overview

Martin Scorsese has long been revered as one of our greatest living directors; his career spans more than 50 years and includes some of the most celebrated American gangster films - from Mean Streets to Casino and, of course, Goodfellas. His latest foray into the genre is The Irishman, a majestic epic that covers bold, new ground. Starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, the film examines organised crime in post-war America through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organised crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics. Featuring special on-set photography and studio portraits by Brigitte Lacombe, unit photography by Niko Tavernise and a text by author and film critic Tom Shone, this stunning monograph takes readers behind the scenes and examines the making of The Irishman in the context of Scorsese's expansive career. Through interviews with Scorsese, De Niro, Pacino, Pesci, and the rest of the film's cast and creative team, Shone situates The Irishman as a reminiscence of Scorsese's own life and times - an intimate and cutting meditation on loyalty, betrayal, and regret. AUTHOR: Tom Shone is the film critic of the London Sunday Times and author of Martin Scorsese: A Retrospective (Abrams), Blockbuster: How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Summer (Simon & Schuster), Tarantino: A Retrospective (Thames & Hudson) and the forthcoming Nolan Variations (Knopf). He also teaches film at NYU. Martin Scorsese (Director/Producer/Screenwriter) is an Academy Award-winning Director and one of the most influential filmmakers working today. He has directed critically acclaimed, award-winning films including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and many more. Scorsese is the founder and chair of The Film Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation and protection of motion picture history. 2016 saw the release of Scorsese's passion project, Silence, based on the acclaimed novel by Shusaku Endo. Scorsese has directed numerous documentaries including the Peabody Award winning No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, Elia Kazan: A Letter to Elia, and George Harrison: Living in the Material World, for which Scorsese received Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Nonfiction Special. In 2019, Netflix released Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, the director's second film about Dylan, this one focusing on his legendary 1975 tour. The Irishman is Scorsese's 25th feature film. Hardcover in a luxury silk slipcase 200 illustrations
