Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationDonna Suchy is an experienced attorney and professional engineer focused on facilitating legal justice and renewable energy generation. She has degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Iowa, M.S. degrees in energy and alternative energy engineering and a J.D. degree in Intellectual Property Law. She is both a registered professional engineer and licensed attorney. Her career, both in the engineering and legal fields, has been focused on Intellectual Property (IP), energy and environmental issues. Her engineering experience has included a wide array of energy and environmental projects including soil and groundwater remediation during the development of Oklahoma City’s Bricktown. Her legal experience includes work on technology creation and IP legal issues. Donna is an active participant in professional organizations. Currently she holds a leadership position in the Intellectual Property Law Section (IPL) of the American Bar Association and is the former Chair of the section. She was also chair of the Rochester Intellectual Property Association [RIPLA]. She has written articles and books on IP topics, including a book on Protecting IP in China as well as a Primer on the Valuation of IP Assets. She served for many years as a City Planning Commissioner for the city of Rochester N.Y. and other similar community related positions. Donna currently serves on the board of Legal Services, offering IP legal services for the underserved and on the board of I-Renew dedicated to bringing sustainable alternative energy sources to Iowa and the Midwest. She lectures at various universities on IP protection, technology related issues and the law. When not working, Donna enjoys travelling, biking, running, yoga, reading, gardening and her children and grandchildren. She is a Master Gardener and is deeply passionate about sustainability and environmental conservation. Her love for nature was nurtured by her upbringing on a farm in Iowa, where she developed a profound appreciation for nature and her community. Her personal philosophy includes giving back in ways that make a meaningful difference to local and global communities. She is a firm believer in Gandhi’s idea of “being the change you want to see in the world.” Donna Suchy was Managing Counsel, Intellectual Property at Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX, responsible for developing and implementing patent corporate strategy, litigation, due diligence, and advising corporate management on the legal and operational implications of IP laws. She has extensive experience in patent and trademark prosecution and related litigation and transactional work. Donna was formerly with Eastman Kodak where she was both an inventor and Corporate Chief IP Counsel for the Commercial Business. She has worked in a wide range of technical and legal areas including electrical, chemical, software, computer technology and optics, as well as in energy and media law. Prior to practicing law Donna was involved in the energy and environmental fields as an engineer for an energy company and as a manager at a regional bank where she was in charge of asset evaluations for multimillion-dollar portfolios. She is a registered engineer in Texas and Oklahoma and has written and lectured on legal topics related primarily to patent prosecution, corporate transactions, IP valuations, and intellectual property law. She is a Past Chair of the ABA section of intellectual property (ABA IPL) and continues to be active in many IP organizations. Donna has been a speaker at numerous national and international legal forums on IP issues. She teaches classes on the law and IP at UCI (the University of California at Irvine), University of Iowa and Iowa State University as well as in Rochester, New York (RIT) and in Texas.
