OverviewThis textbook is designed for advanced (graduate and postgraduate) students, and will also be of interest to scholars. It blends a cognitive linguistic approach to language and language use with insights from contemporary pragmatics, the ultimate aim being to advance a unified model of cognitive pragmatics. Basic themes in cognitive linguistics and pragmatics are covered ranging from figurative language and thought, e.g. conceptual metaphor and metonymy, the role of inferencing in the construction of meaning, in particular, indirect speech acts, to the conceptual and functional motivation of morphosyntactic structure. Finally, the book offers many suggestions and ideas for student papers as well as larger research projects that promise to reveal new insights into conceptual structure, communicative function, and their influence on the grammatical structure of language. Table of ContentsReviewsKlaus-Uwe Panther's Introduction to Cognitive Pragmatics (ICP) is a welcome addition to the growing field of cognitively oriented pragmatic research. [...] Panther's Introduction to Cognitive Pragmatics is an interesting and useful addition to the literature. He presents a comprehensive analysis of the data using theories from pragmatics, which he views through the lens of cognitive linguistics. In this, ICP is excellent. It could act as a standalone text to be used as the basis for an advanced undergraduate or postgraduate course or as the basis for a methodology for interpreting data. [...] Panther's work may present an important counterpoint to current theories and debates. It may also provide a rich source of worked and analysed examples which may lead to new developments within cognitive pragmatics. In summary, I think researchers interested in the intersection between pragmatics and cognitive science, especially those working within a cognitive linguistic framework, will find something useful or interesting in Panther's book. -- Jack Wilson, University of Salford, in Journal of Pragmatics 206 (2023) Author InformationTab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
