OverviewExcerpt from Interpretation of Dairy Pedigrees The systems used in herd registers are quite diverse. Those used for the recording of dairy cattle appear to be adequate and quite satisfactory When used in pedigree tracing. In their barest outlines they consist of recording the name and number of the offspring and the name and number of the sire and dam. Males and females are recorded separately. Each animal is given a distinctive name and number. All records are arranged numeri cally. They are not satisfactory for tracing the progeny of any given animal. The system as a whole is, however, so much bet ter than that devised by man for recording his own ancestry that there is little room for complaint.
