Overview

Why another book about the Internet? The answer is simple: while there are a number of excellent books on various aspects of networking, the Internet, HTML, web design, web programming, XML, and web searching, there is not a single survey text that explores each of these topics holistically in the context of the knowledge and skill needs of those preparing for careers in any of the many information technology (IT) intensive fields such as library and information science (LIS), business and management information systems (MIS), and decision science (DIS), to name but a few. In so doing, this foundational text offers its readers both a comprehensive overview of basic counseling and tested solutions to a variety of technical situations. The perfect introduction for students lacking technological expertise while called upon to demonstrate a working knowledge of basic concepts and applications. Why another book about the Internet? Part 1 focuses on the technologies of the Internet, specifically networks, TCPIP, higher level Internet protocols, and security issues for Internet connected PCs. Part 2 focuses on the many forms of Internet content and how it is created: documentary and multimedia formats; web graphics; web publishing in HTML; principles of good web design; controlling presentation with styles; web scripting and dynamic content; and the possibility of the semantic web with XML. Part 3 is devoted to the topic of Internet information retrieval and includes a brief overview of the principles of IR; Internet searching past and present; a detailed examination of search engine functions and limitations; peer-to-peer approaches; image and multimedia IR; and enhancing intellectual access by the application and use of metadata. The perfect introduction for students lacking technological expertise while called upon to demonstrate a working knowledge of basic concepts and applications.

Enhanced with the inclusion the appendix entry 'The Binary Machine', a glossary, bibliography, and index, Internet Technologies and Information Services is as comprehensive as it is 'user friendly', making it ideal as a course textbook and for on-site librarians seeking to accommodate their own community or school library to the age of the computer. - The Midwest Book Review For students in library and information science, business and management information systems, and decision science, this text introduces internet technologies and applications. Miller (library and information science, U. of Kentucky) covers network and internet technologies and fundamentals, networking and connection technologies, and internet protocols; web design and publishing, including HTML, graphics, CSS, web programming, and XML; and internet content, information retrieval, search engines, and Web 2.0. He defines each, and discusses their applications and how they work. - Reference & Research Book News ... a current example of just what all librarians, including teacher-librarians, need to understand about the digital and virtual world. - Teacher Librarian The extensive Bibliography and the Glossary of Computer and Technical Terms/Vocabulary contained in the book are very useful. This monograph is a precise survey of all the aspects of Internet exploration as currently experienced. Internet Technologies and Information Services would be a good text for learners interested in an introduction to this field and a helpful addition to any collection on the internet and Web searching. - Library Times International ... contains solid information about the subjects presented ... This book does a fine job summarizing, and familiarizing the reader with, basic technology concepts. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels of undergraduate and graduate students. - Choice A useful book for one considering a text for such a course, or as a teach-yourself work, this is not a work to be read lightly. - ARBA
