Overview

The first part of this book describes and explains the basic concepts of neurocognition, social cognition, and social competency that are now allowing us a better understanding of schizophrenia. Current treatment approaches and empirical support for them are also discussed. The core of the book is a clear and structured description of the five subprograms making up IPT: # Cognitive Differentiation # Social Perception # Verbal Communication # Social Skills # Interpersonal Problem-Solving Clinicians learn step by step how to apply the therapy techniques and to select the appropriate therapy materials (described in detail in practical appendices). The book also provides practical advice about dealing with group processes and individual dyadic situations. Differential indications, assessment, therapy planning and evaluation are presented. Therapists will also learn how to use IPT within multimodal therapy and rehabilitation efforts (case management; implementation of IPT). The final part of the book provides an overview of further developments of IPT: Integrated Neurocognitive Therapy (INT), conceptualized mainly for outpatients with better social functioning, and specific social skills programs for residential, vocational, and recreational rehabilitation (WAF).

Reviews

A thoroughly updated treatment manual and summary of research on the IPT model - There is considerable evidence supporting the effectiveness of the IPT model in shizophrenia - An important feature of the IPT program is that it integrates the remediation of cognitive impairments with training in interpersonal competence, including social skills and problem-solving. This integration - appears to be critical to the success of the program - This book is a welcome resource to the growing field of cognitive remediation for schizophrenia, written by an experienced group of clinical researchers whose seminal work in the application of integrated cognitive and psychosocial rehabilitation programming has significant impact - Kim T. Mueser and Susan R. McGurk in PsycCRITIQUES, 2011, Vol. 56 Integrated Psychological Therapy is a new treatment manual and comprehensive guide for using this empirically-supported approach [...] [It] is a welcome addition to the psychiatric literature. [...] This is a useful new manual for the treatment of cognition and social skills deficits in patients with chronic psychosis. Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine in Doody's Book Reviews, 2011
