OverviewIngeborg Tyssen (1945-2002) was one of the leading photographers of her time. She was born in Holland where she also tragically met her death. Ingeborg brought a European sensibility to seemingly unlikely Australian subject matter. Hers was truly a multicultural vision. In her early work (and from time to time until her death) she responded to photography in the classic hunter-gatherer mode of a street photographer. Very soon, however, this randomness gave way to more deliberate choices, whereby place, time and light became structures from which she extracted a series of images, often of near monumental scope and quality. Her selection of subject, her framing, and most importantly her timing assisted her in creating a body of work that is simultaneously observational and intimate, warm and distanced, withdrawn and wry. It is timely that there should be a definitive collection of Ingeborg's work.
