OverviewThe Indian in Exile is a work that comes full circle. It traces the transportation of sub-continental Indians, by the British, to British Guiana, a colony located on the South American continent. Indians were brought to the colony as indentured servants, mostly to work on the sugar-cane plantations. British Guiana gained its independence in 1966 and became the Republic of Guyana. Because of post-independence political upheavals in the country, many Indians migrated to other countries, most notably the United States and Canada. Because of financial successes in these countries, many of these transplanted Indians have been able to make pilgrimages to the country of their ancestral birth, thus completing a diasporic circle.
