Overview

This volume presents Indian English texts drawn from diverse sources and a variety of registers and domains. It provides a sociolinguistic description of the Indian situation, and the forms and functions of English in this setting. Based on his collection and analysis of English used, the author reflects the variation within the country along with various dimensions: historical, regional, ethnic, social and stylistic. Textual analysis is divided into five groups: 19th-century texts; literary texts by both Indians and non-Indians; newspaper English; miscellaneous texts; and spoken English texts.

Reviews

This is an excellent contribution to the respected series edited by Edgar Schneider. Mehrotra is clearly exceptionally well versed in the subject matter, and in addition to his linguistic and sociolinguistic expertise, he has the advantage of possessing local knowledge and cultural awareness at a level which very few outsiders could ever attain. -- Mark Newbrook, Australian Journal of Linguistics Vol. 18(2), 1998
