OverviewFor more than 1500 years Madonnas have been an important part of religious art - across Europe and beyond. This small booklet highlights many of the best known, as well as numerous lesser-known, paintings of the Madonna and child. Beyond including Mary and a young Jesus, there are not many similarities between all of the paintings: some include angels, and some of the others include saints. Some of the paintings include halos, but many do not. Some show Jesus as a baby, in some He is portrayed more as a toddler. Most of the paintings are painted in an interior scene, but a few are set outdoors. What other similarities and differences do you notice as you enjoy the paintings from across the centuries? Beginning with a love of all things Leonardo da Vinci, in recent years she branched out to Claude Monet, Winslow Homer, and Norman Rockwell. And there her love of art sat for many years. Only in the last few years has she come to recognize and enjoy the works of many other artists, and in the process has fallen in love with many of their paintings, both well-known and not so well-known. This series started simply: a few books to introduce children to art and artists they might not have known - all arranged along a single theme (first hats, then with animals, then bridges, and so it went). Before long she had multiplied her efforts and her books, all the while introducing not just her students, but also many adults to the vast array of artwork that so many of us sadly neglect."
