OverviewIn March 2006, the residents of 911 Prestes Maia, a ramshackle tower block in the centre of Sao Paulo, were surprised to learn that they were to be evicted within 28 days. The building, neglected by its landlord and thought to be empty, was actually home to 468 families with 315 children. These residents had driven out the vermin and the drug dealers and cleaned the place up - creating possibly the largest squat in the world. Bittencourt's photos are a powerful record of this diverse community.
