Overview

Children's imagination will come alive with colorful illustrations from an Apple Up and About, and Zaza the River Zigzagging to Zanzibar, a Laala Lullaby for Leebila to a Wish-Wash Watch. Through rhyme and alliteration children are introduced to each letter along with their sounds. To teach sight recognition for letters in the alphabet along with common sight words, simple vocabulary of everyday things families' use and events they participate in have been given an amusing twist. Teachers and homeschooling parents can also create a variety of activities based on this fun and exciting book to help children appreciate other ethnicities and cultures. Add this classic bilingual alphabet book to your alphabet library. It is also a perfect gift for your loved ones. There is relatively little on the market about Ghana's Ga language, which makes the Illustrated English-Ga Alphabet of special note. Illustrations by Ljupka Stojkova provide colorful, attractive embellishments to this basic primer, which begins with 'A is for apple' (A kee aplo) and follows up the A-B-C with phrases in English and Ga that help reinforce the language. As the alphabet progresses, learners of all ages receive descriptions that reflect the flavors and culture of Ghana. Each letter is presented in both upper and lower case. The exuberance of the descriptions help capture young learner imaginations, teaching them about Ghana's rituals, environment, and peoples. More than a simple A-B-C guide, the Illustrated English-Ga Alphabet embraces the cultural lessons that come with learning a new language, making it a recommendation for collections looking for primers not just about Ga, but about those people who speak the language. Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review Illustrated English-GA Alphabet, by Flora A. Trebi-Ollennu and illustrated by Ljupka Stojkova is a short nonfiction book written and illustrated in two languages, English being the primary. While the book is targeted at children, this book would be a helpful guide for anyone unfamiliar with the Ga language spoken in Accra, the capital of Ghana (West Africa). The book is filled with illustrations depicting children and parents. There are a variety of objects, such as cars, jewelry, flowers, and musical instruments. It is also filled with animals such as elephants, ducks, octopus; all pictures that fascinate children. This book also definitely helps guide the reader to learn and retain the information presented. Trebi-Ollenuu and Stojkova have done a wonderful job of creating and illustrating a children's book. The examples are in bold, vivid colors. The print is large and also colorful. The pictures of parents and children depict happy scenes, such as a mother pushing her child on a swing, or a father putting his baby in a crib to sleep. While this book has captivating images, I did notice that the letters C, Q, and X were omitted from the English alphabet. As I continued on reading, I learned that these letters are not part of the Ga alphabet which I found to be an interesting fact. Illustrated English-GA Alphabet, by Flora A. Trebi-Ollennu and illustrated by Ljupka is beautifully illustrated and is the perfect read that will take you on a journey to a different country. Literary Titan Want to learn more about Ga culture and language, the ethnic group of Ghana's capital, Accra? This bilingual alphabet book will help teach little ones the alphabet using great illustrations, text examples, using the letter repeatedly in sentences, and show you the Ga language. A is for appleA kee aploI did not know anything about the Ga language or culture before this book. My son thought it was very interesting to see how different another language can look. He would spend a bunch of time trying to figure out the pronunciation and even asking Google for how to say different things. The illustrations are very well done and engaging. All the imagery portrays something from the Ga culture. This is a great book for English or Ga speaking children. I could definitely see this in classrooms. Kids Picture Book Review
