Reviews

"In poetry we throw around phrases like ""telling your story"" and ""speaking truth to power"" so much that it can be easy to forget what that work really looks like in practice and why it matters. This book is a thunderclap of a reminder. It wields language as defiance, as cultivation, as summoning. It's a powerful example of what poetry can actually offer, especially in this historical moment. Kyle Tran Myhre, author of Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough (Button Poetry) I, The Revolution is a diatribe against ableist society, a proud outpouring of broken-and-Brown love and power, and a (non-violent) call to arms. It's a reminder of how even those purportedly sharing our vision of an inclusive future are content to leave marginalised communities behind. Highlighting how the unheard must fight against the architecture of oppression just to get to a polling station, a protest - just to get through the day -, these poems ignite a flame in the heart of anyone who reads them. There's a directness to Vera's style which, when coupled with the rhythm of his writing and the imagery of a hostile capitalist America, renders his message inescapable: the time to lament our exclusion from society has passed. We deserve more than begrudgingly or faux-magnanimously offered scraps. The revolution starts with each of us... with a sharing of a message, with poetry, pain, love, and vision of progress. A.G. Parker, author of 'Twisted Roots' (Reconnecting Rainbows Press) I, the Revolution"" will pull you in from the first piece. You get to know the person behind the poem on a refreshingly personal level right away. There is no fluff or time wasted in moving through this collection. He is that poet who rings truths between your ears and forces you to face stories of those who are marginalized. Feast on this book and ""feast on love"" ...Vera's word flow and calls for revolution, are deeply thought out and intentionally placed, so you feel the need to stand up and cry out for revolution too! The work is clever, relevant, unabashedly authentic, and courageous. Marissa Prada, author of 'Conversations with Grief' & 'Butterflies and Lies' (Read or Green Books) Unapologetic and bold; there's an unfoldable truth wedged in every stanza of this manuscript. The tones are limitlessly familiar and beautifully alluring. What a great read. Jah Smalls, author of 'On Compassion'"
