OverviewIn 2018, the American Chinese School Venus campus held a cultural essay contest. The eligible students were those from Grades 8-12 of Chinese ancestry in the Washington DC area, including Maryland and Virginia. The prompt of the contest was: What about Chinese culture do you feel most proud of or find most meaningful, and wish to share with people from other cultures? These essays were scored by a group of judges including professional teachers, language professors, and college students; then the essays were collected into this book.The goal of the event was to help our community understand that Chinese American students are a truly diverse and unique population in the US. Their voices should be heard, understood and respected. -We wanted them to freely express themselves, so we asked them to write the essay in English.-We wanted their value propositions to be respected, so we presented them in a book format. -We wanted their thoughts to be widely shared across communities, so we published the book through Amazon. This book has the power to bridge the cultural and ideal gap between parents and their Chinese American children. More importantly, this book needs to be shared with educators, community leaders, social activists, politicians, and the younger generation of Chinese American kids because they are the social engineers capable of creating change. We know that unity and empathy between the melting pot of cultures that exist today is the only way we can truly work together for a better tomorrow.
