OverviewAfua is an elderly woman from the Ashanti region in Ghana who was visiting her grandchildren who live in the United States of America. During her visit, she spends much of her time telling her 5 grandchildren interesting stories about their heritage in an effort to help her grandchildren gain a deeper understanding of their cultural identity. So, it is the story of today I AM ASHANTI! The purpose of this book: 1. Emphasize the importance of Black representation in children's books 2. Empower children to develop confidence and a sense of pride and connection to their heritage 3. Inspire readers to develop an interest in learning about African history, heritage and culture. 4. Learning about different cultures can promote empathy and tolerance for people from diverse backgrounds. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Evelyn Dumfeh was born in Ghana to Ashanti parents. She was raised in Italy and moved to the United States at 16 years old. Evelyn is based in the Chicagoland area where her and her husband are raising their 5 children. She has an undergraduate degree in Corporate Communications but has worked as a full time real estate agent for 13 years.
