OverviewThe Mikkes basin is located at the north center of Morocco. It comprises three distinct zones presenting diversified geological formations and sheltering a phreatic, a confined aquifer in Sais basin, and a shallow aquifer in the Tabular Atlas. The interpretation of Mikkes piezometric data suggests the existence of a hydraulic connection between the groundwater and the River. The important decrease of water level in the Mikkes aquifers, observed since the beginning of the 1980's, is probably due to a combined effect of dryness and overexploitation. The Sais phreatic groundwater springs have shown the greatest depletion, whereas the deep or mixed-origing springs experienced lesser flow variations. This can be explained to the relative position of piezometric level compared to the River level. For the Sais groundwater, the positive correlation between the River flow and the piezometric levels outside flood periods, suggests the assumption of a supply-drainage relationship between the aquifer and the River. The hydrochemistry of Mikkes basin waters is largely related to the geology of formations traversed. It may also be related to the interaction of surface water and groundwater.
