Best known as guitarist, songwriter and producer for the Grammy Award-winning progressive rock band The Mars Volta, Rodriguez Lopez also counts writing, acting, film direction, and soundtrack scoring among his many talents. Growing up in El Paso, TX, he first gained notoriety with the critically-acclaimed post-hardcore band At the Drive-In. Relocating to Long Beach, CA in 2000, he founded The Mars Volta the following year, initiating an intense eleven-year (to date) cycle of touring, relentless recording, and commitment to artistic expression that puts most other performers to shame. In 2009, he and The Mars Volta were awarded the Grammy for the track Wax Simulacra from the album The Bedlam in Goliath. In 2010, his first feature film release, The Sentimental Engine Slayer, had its U.S. premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival.
