Overview

Hummingbirds are a unique group of birds that are found only in the Americas. Of the 366 species, most are found in South America, and half of them live close to the equator. Some of these birds will travel as far north as Canada, but most stay much closer to home. About 26 of the hummingbird species travel to the U.S., and a few barely reach us at all. A few of these visitors are vagrants, meaning they are only occasional visitors; we will mention those along with the rest. Some of these birds you will see every year as they visit your backyard. We know that as the spring flowers bloom; the hummingbirds aren't far behind. Males usually arrive first to claim territory, and females will soon follow. Many of us put out feeders to attract these amazing birds. Having a feeder near a window allows us to enjoy these wonders of nature and gives us more time to identify them.
