He is perhaps best known for his American Civil War studies and his 1969 work Huey Long, the definitive study of Huey Pierce Long, Jr., which won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Other acclaimed works include Lincoln and the Radicals (1941), P.G.T. Beauregard, Napoleon in Gray (1955), Romance and Realism in Southern Politics (1961), McClellan, Sherman, and Grant (1962), and posthumously History of American Wars (1981). In 1964, he received the Harry S. Truman Award in Civil War History. Upon his death, the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors established the T. Harry Williams Chair of American History and the T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History. Tom Weiner, a dialogue director and voice artist best known for his roles in video games and television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Transformers, is an Earphones Award winner and Audie Award finalist.
