OverviewThis book studies the way profitability influences psychiatric treatment in private hospitals. This research is a case study of a subgroup of former psychiatric patients and their advocates who challenged exploitation by certain private psychiatric hospitals. It outlines the process of social triage and describes those qualities possessed by this particularly vulnerable population that permitted them to protest. The implications of the privatization of key institutional services and modification of the theoretical argument of social triage are two substantive problems dealt with in this research. A portion of the population resisted their exploitation, and although they were vulnerable, they were the privileged vulnerable. They possessed the personal and social resources to fight back within legitimate social channels, and wrote letters to newspapers and contacted their legislators. The media published their allegations and the Texas Senate responded by holding public hearings to address their complaints. Glumm takes first hand accounts of private psychiatric hospitals policies and shows that there is often willful neglect of patients who do not have the money to pay, and sometimes there is even manipulation on behalf of psychiatrists and nurses to keep people in therapy just to run up their expenses with insurance companies, only to miraculously 'cure' them when their coverage runs out.
