He was reared in the Spring Branch Community of Marion County, South Carolina on a sharecropper's farm called The Pint. He is an Elder in The United Methodist Church and a Full Member of The General Board of Discipleship's Academy of Preaching; reserved for those with potential to be great preachers and, or significant church leaders. He is a Member of The Africa University's Development Board Advisory Committee, and has made several trips to Africa and to the University in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Joseph Jr. was married to the late Mildred Wilson and the couple had three sons; and one daughter in their forty-five (45) year marriage.
