Overview

As criticism of the U.S. education system grows among parents, so does the appeal of home-schooling. Shortly after moving to Woodstock, New York, in 2010, Rachel Papo began to photograph a small number of families living in the region who chose to follow this path. While much of the discussion about the subject tends to revolve around parents and their beliefs, she chose to focus on the lives and routines of the children, in an attempt to capture their spirit and the meaning of growing up outside the conventional four classroom walls.

Author Information

Rachel Papo (b.1970) is an award winning American photographer whose work has been exhibited and published worldwide. Papo was born in Columbus, Ohio and was raised in Israel. She began photographing as a teenager and attended a renowned fine-arts high-school in Haifa, Israel. At age eighteen she served in the Israeli Air Force as a photographer. She earned a BFA in Fine Arts from Ohio State University (1991-96), and an MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City (2002-05). Rachel's photographs are included in numerous public and private collections. She currently lives with her husband and two children in Berlin, Germany, working on personal projects, as well as accepting commissioned projects. Rachel is represented by ClampArt Gallery in New York City. Ariel Shanberg is the Executive Director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock. Holly Graff is an unschooling mom and former public school science teacher.She currently teaches science classes for homeschoolers at her home in the Catskills of New York. She blogs at Unschool Days about the school-free lifestyle.
