OverviewRare are collections of Civil War letters from soldiers on the front lines of battle. William F. Kimmell, a private in the 8th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, took part in some of the bloodiest battles of the war. Throughout, he maintained a faithful correspondence with a friend back home--Leah Crispell--a friend who later became his wife. W.F.'s words describe battle scenes in vivid detail and leave nothing to the imagination. Comrade after comrade begin to fall in deadly skirmishes against the South, but Kimmel repeatedly survives even though bullets whir by him on all sides. His greatest desire is to return home by the 4th of July 1864. Although he does not return by that date, he does survive the war unscathed. His letters are preserved today, nearly 150 years after the war's end.
