Overview

This is a memoir of a boy born in 1926 in a small seaside town on the northwest coast of England who grew up in pre-and wartime Britain and who recalls, in this account, his many adventures before, during, and after the conclusion of World War II. In the latter half of the war, our teenage author enlists in His Majesty King George VI's Royal Navy and is assigned to serve as a naval Coder on several British warships, culminating on HMS Cavendish, a state-of-the-art Destroyer based primarily in the Southeast Asia theater of war. Throughout his service, the neophyte mariner chronicles his experiences, outrageous mishaps, and the life lessons he learns along his journey. At the conclusion of hostilities, we follow the path of the demobbed and restless young sailor upon his return to Britain as he explores a variety of careers and opportunities over the next decade in search of adventure and fulfillment. Written in a humorous and light-hearted manner, somewhat in the style of Jerome K. Jerome or P.G. Wodehouse, it is hoped this audiobook will appeal to listeners interested in the personal recollections and experiences of a sharply observant and irreverent chronicler born almost one hundred years ago.

Author Information

Eric Victor Rendel was born in 1926 and grew up in Wallasey, Wirral, a small seaside town on the Northwest coast of England. By the author's early teens, Britain was at war with Germany, and within a few years, the writer had enlisted in His Majesty's Royal Navy, serving on an illustrious naval vessel as a coder in the Southeast Asia theater of operations towards the end of World War II. Upon return to Britain, he embarked on many unsatisfying careers before finally emigrating from the UK to America. Once there, he eventually settled successfully in the real estate business and lived in California for many decades. Towards the end of his life, encouraged by his six children and one granddaughter, he wrote this first and only volume in his intended trilogy, describing it as ""a ragbag of my childhood and young adult memories. So many adventures. And so many more for the next two books!"" Eric Rendel died in 2014. Christine Rendel is a British-born audiobook narrator living in New York City. With an acting and musical background, as well as a long healthcare career, she has narrated nearly forty fiction and nonfiction books for major publishers as well as small independent houses. Her favorite genres include cozy mystery, romance, drama, fantasy, and biography. Christine maintains a professional home studio on the end of eastern Long Island, where she loves to narrate and produce audiobooks, surrounded by nature, her family, two dogs, and a lot of Koi fish. Christine is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA, the Audio Publishers Association, and Actors' Equity Association. Gerard Doyle reads everything from adult, young adult, and children's books to literary fiction, mysteries, humor, adventure, and fantasy. He has won countless AudioFile Earphones Awards and was named a Best Voice in Young Adult Fiction in 2008. His audiobook credits include the bestselling Inheritance series (Eragon, Eldest, and Brisinger), How to Train Your Dragon, The Looking Glass Wars, Clubland, And Thereby Hangs a Tale, and Risk Worth Taking. His career in British repertory theatre includes many productions, most notably The Crucible, The Tempest, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Fiddler on the Roof. In America, he has appeared in Broadway in The Weir and on television in New York Undercover and Law & Order. Born of Irish parents and raised and educated in England, Gerard has taught drama at Ross School for the past several years.
