Twelve-year-old Annabelle dreams of floating through the air in one of Thaddeus Lowe's hydrogen balloons, ever since she heard he brought one to Washington, DC to show President Lincoln. But between her parents' disapproval, and the ongoing conflict between the Union Army and Confederate Rebels, Annabelle may never get her chance to soar! It only takes the threat of southern troops invading the capital city, and an outbreak of yellow fever to send Annabelle far away to Aunt Adeline, who lives a quiet life far away from all the fighting between the states. What could possibly go wrong in the little town of Fredericksburg in the winter of 1862?
