Overview

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. German Railway history began with the opening of the steam-hauled Bavarian Ludwig Railway between Nuremberg and F rth on 7 December 1835. This had been preceded by the opening of the horse-hauled Prince William Railway on 20 September 1831. The first long distance railway was the Leipzig-Dresden railway, completed on 7 April 1839. Political disunity of three dozen states and a pervasive conservatism made it difficult to build railways in the 1830s. However, by the 1840s, trunk lines did link the major cities; each German state was responsible for the lines within its own borders.
