OverviewThe past five decades have witnessed a flourishing of democracy and press freedom in Latin America. When Edward Seaton began his crusade in the 1970s on behalf of journalists and newspapers throughout the region, 80 percent of the countries were without either. Today most countries have an independent press and credible elections. While the change reflects a worldwide wave, the individuals portrayed here were in their countries the locomotives of change. These courageous, modern-thinking journalistic leaders risked in many cases their businesses and even their lives to tell truth about government and society. They faced Iberian traditions that made their accomplishments even more impressive. Organized in this book by geographic regions, their histories are related one country at a time. The people in these stories are heroes who helped build their emerging democracies. Full Product DetailsAuthor: Edward SeatonPublisher: Seaton Publishing Co., Inc. Table of ContentsReviewsThis is an engaging and valuable memoir of Edward Seaton's more than four decades of involvement with press freedom issues throughout Latin America. Its heroes are largely the courage newspaper editors and reporters who have risked their lives to provide a free press in their respective countries. its scoundrels mostly the dictators who have sought to suppress the press. The role of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) and Seaton's own role in this important struggle are central to the narrative. At a time when a free and independent press is under attack in many countries, including the United States, this book is an insightful reminder of how press freedoms and democratic processes are maintained by heroic individuals and associations. --William Richter, Emeritus Political Science Professor and former Associate Provost, Kansas State University I thoroughly enjoyed reading Heroes and Scoundrels. It put in perspective a lot I didn't know about the Inter American Press Association. --Diana Daniels, former General Counsel, Washington Post Company, and former IAPA president.
