In mathematics, the Hermite constant In for integers n > 0, named after Charles Hermite, is defined as follows. Given a lattice L in Euclidean space Rn, let I 1(L) denote the least length of a nonzero element of L.Charles Hermite was a French mathematician who did research on number theory, quadratic forms, invariant theory, orthogonal polynomials, elliptic functions, and algebra. Hermite polynomials, Hermite normal form, Hermitian operators, and cubic Hermite splines are named in his honor. One of his students was Henri Poincare.
