Overview

Focuses on 20 fundamental core skills required of the Speech-language pathologist Designed in a workshop format - ideal for student courses and continuing education for practitioners Includes free DVD with visual presentations and demonstrations of skills Unique in its design and content, this book-DVD combination helps students and practitioners enhance their clinical skills by working through guided practice of skills and concepts on topics such as developing the therapeutic mindset, appropriate proximity, and stimulus presentation. The use of task-analysis for development of specific underlying therapeutic skills makes provision of therapy logical and manageable. The author focuses on the fundamental activities that occur within the speech-language therapy session and on the specific core skills of the therapeutic process. She provides definitions of numerous research-based terms related to underlying skills within the speech-language therapy session and offers guided practice and demonstrations of approximately 20 fundamental therapeutic skills in the form of systematic workshops that include both scripted and DVD demonstrations of skills using advance organizers, definitions/demonstrations, think-out-loud questions, prompts for practice, and post organizers for each therapy skill addressed. A 50-minute DVD accompanies the text and adds significantly to the tutorial aspects of the book by presenting visual demonstrations of skills. One- to three-minute vignettes give students real-life examples of how nine specific therapeutic skills may be implemented. Then, in two 15-minute sessions of therapy, students view implementation of basic articulation and basic language therapy from introduction to closing, demonstrations. Both are invaluable to both beginning and practicing SLPs. This unique digital resource gives readers an opportunity to study at length, as often as needed, the specific underlying skills needed to provide effective therapy. Here's How to Do Therapy is an ideal text plus DVD for clinical practicum experiences or clinical management courses, as well as an individual guidebook for clinicians engaged in SLP intervention.

Reviews

Mandie Harris, Oklahoma State University: The How to Do Therapy text is an excellent tool - I wish it would have been available when I was a beginning clinician - and it is even good reading for a seasoned clinician! Allison Spitznagel, University of West Georgia: Dr. Dwight has spent the last few years of her life devoted to this book entitled Here's How to Do Therapy. Her book has helped the undergraduate student better grasp the concept of beginning therapy in the general setting. The book is exquisitely plotted out in steps to take before one begins actual therapy. Here's How to Do is a wonderful resource for beginning Speech-Language Pathology students. This book helps guide students by giving explicit examples of what to say and how to react to certain surprises in the therapy session. Dr. Dwight also gives excellent guide with the vignettes. Sarah M. Payne, University of West Georgia: Dr. Debra Dwight's book, Here's How to Do Therapy: Hands-On Core Skills in Speech-Language Pathology, is a very useful resource for the student Speech-Language Pathologist. It focuses on different therapy techniques and provides workshops so that the student can try his/her hand at different techniques. As a student, I have never used a textbook that provides so much detail and so many opportunities for application in and outside the classroom. I found the book to be practical and easy to read, and I know that I will frequently refer to it once I begin working as a Speech-Language Pathologist. I would recommend this book to any student who is interested in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Dana D. Pell, University of West Georgia: As a Speech Language Therapy major, Here's How to Do Therapy gave me the how of therapy. Through an easy read, all aspects of speech therapy are covered - from interpersonal communication skills, to actual therapy sessions complete with data collection and time management methods. In addition, I found the written and DVD examples to be far superior to the typical clinical teaching method of observing live therapy sessions. Here's How to Do Therapy is a great resource to have for the beginning and experienced therapist. It is a book that will remain on my therapist bookshelf for many years to come. Lisa J. Eady: When I took [the course title] Methods of Clinical Management from Dr. Dwight, she was in the process of writing her book, Here's How to Do Therapy. She was teaching from handouts she created and then finally putting those handouts into this book. Everything Dr. Dwight taught us in this class came from her own experiences and I truly feel there is no better way to learn. When Here's How to Do Therapy was published I immediately went out and purchased it. I felt this book would be a tremendous asset to my therapy library. It is a guide that is easy to follow and every speech-language pathology student and professional should own. From basic materials lists for the speech-language therapy kit to step-by-step scripted therapy sessions, this book has everything you need to conduct therapy for all levels and types of speech-language disorders.

Author Information

Debra Dwight, Ed.D Debra Dwight is an Alabama native and received a bachelor's degree in Speech Therapy and a master's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Alabama, Mobile. Her master's and doctoral degrees in Speech-Language Pathology were received from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, where Debra developed an interest in clinical teaching. Although she worked as a college/ university faculty member in different positions over the past ten years, Debra describes herself as a clinical practitioner due to her constant desire to impact the quality of service delivery in the speech-language profession. She has worked as a speech-language pathologist in public schools, as a university clinical supervisor, as director of a pre-K special needs program, and as a college instructor, and assistant professor. She currently serves as Director of Speech-Language Pathology Programs at University of West Georgia, Carrollton. Her desire to improve the quality of services provided by speech-language professionals led Dr. Dwight to develop a practical method for teaching basic, hands-on, core skills to university students majoring in Speech-Language Pathology. Drawing from three decades of combined academic, clinical, and supervisory experiences, she developed the text, Here's How to do Therapy: Hands-On Core Skills in Speech-Language Pathology, a practical guide for all Speech-Language Pathology professionals.
