OverviewTom Alford loves horses and he loves his work at Squire Prideaux's stables where Rapier, his master's magnificent gelding, is under his care. He loves it that is, until a mysterious stranger threatens to give him away for breaking a rule he did not even know existed. Now he is in the power of an informer who wants him to betray his friend, Nick. For Nick meets with a group of townspeople to read the Bible and pray together and this is 1685: such meetings are illegal. Nick wants Tom to think about serious issues of life and death but such things seem unreal: surely, death is a long way off. Or is it? When the squire and Tom's friends decide to back the Duke of Monmouth's rebel army, Tom is caught up in a conflict that leads to the brink of disaster. What will happen to Rapier in the battle and can Nick's friendship with wild creatures get them both out of danger? Benediction Historical NoteReviews'Heart of Rebellion' brings to life the post-Cromwellian England of the late 17th century, when so-called Dissenters were forced to worship in secret for fear of reprisal from the authorities. Christina Eastwood expertly conjures an atmosphere of fear, suspicion and paranoia, which was surely prevalent at the time, through the trials and tribulations of Tom and his friends, Nick and 'Lazy' John. Through their eyes we see the West Country descend into rebellion and bloodshed, and through these harrowing experiences the characters come to understand the fragility of life and are eventually brought to repentance and faith in Christ. Eastwood is an expert historian, peppering the text with accurate period detail and basing many of her characters and events in real life. This book is entertaining and educational in equal measure, and is a fantastic introduction to the time period for young readers and families. Matthew Wainwright (Author of Out of the Smoke) -- Matthew Wainwright Author InformationChristiana Eastwood has written children's stories since she was a small child herself. She discovered how much youngsters enjoyed historical fiction when teaching her own children and found that reading about engaging characters in an accurate setting was the best way to stimulate a child's interest in history.
