Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Hearing loss in older Chinese: the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study Submitted by CHU Har Ming for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2006 Hearing loss is a prevalent health problem affecting at least 20% of older adults aged >= 50 years in industrial countries. Interestingly, a low (= 1.43) and marked impairment (ORs >= 3.29). Males were statistically more likely to have marked hearing loss (OR = 1.57). The directions of odds ratio provided weak evidence that smoking (OR >= 1.02) and occupational noise exposure (ORs >= 1.08) were at higher odds of being hearing impaired. Furthermore, consumption of some alcohol had a modest protective association with hearing deficits (ORs = .91 - .95). The prevalence of hearing loss in this group of older Chinese closely resembled that in industrial countries.
