Abstract: The distribution of inaudible numbers for the six simple vowels in different low frequency cut and S/N ratio conditions.........................38 Abstract of Hearing aid low frequency cut: Effect on Mandarin tone and simple vowel perception in listening conditions submitted by Zhang Jianxing M. D. 15 for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2002 The present study investigated the impact of low frequency cuts (LCs) and continuous white noise on Mandarin tone and simple vowel perception. Four categories of LCs were manipulated in sequence in a commercial programmable hearing aid. The LCs were as follows: No LC, 6 dB/octave, 12dB/octave, and 18 dB/octave LC. Five signal-to-noise ratios (S/N ratios) of speech to white noise are adopted: 10 dB, 5 dB, 0dB, -5 dB and -10dB S/N ratios. A total of 48 speech stimuli were recorded to four Minidisks via the hearing aid (at four LC setting) attached to a Knowles Electronic Manikin for Acoustic Research (KEMAR) in a sound field. Speech and noise stimuli were presented through earphones to 25 normal hearing native Mandarin speaking listeners monaurally and to three native Mandarin speaking, severe to profound, sensorineural hearing-impaired persons in their better hearing ear. A repeated measures experimental design was adopted in the present study. Data were examined using a mixed between-and-within subject analysis of variance (ANOVA). Pearson correlation was investigated between tone and vowel recognition as well. High tone and vowel recognition scores were achieved for normal hearing listeners in all experimental conditions except for the LC 18 and S/N -10. ANOVA showed no significant differences for tone perception in positive S/N and S/N 0 conditions, indicating that LCs have no impact on Mandarin tone perception in typical low noise conditions. Significant differences (p16 6, LC 6 and LC 18 in negative S/N ratio conditions, indicating the tone perception ability could be significantly affected by a small low frequency cut in a high-level ambient noise situation for the normal hearing listeners. Significant findings (p
