OverviewHCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced during pregnancy. It's made in the placenta and helps provide nutrients to the developing fetus. The HCG diet is a type of metabolic diet created in 1954 by Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons, a British doctor. Dr. Simeons noticed that pregnant women lost fat, not muscle, even when eating fewer calories. Usually, when people consume fewer calories, their bodies use muscle for energy first. Dr. Simeons thought this was due to the HCG hormone. He began injecting small amounts of HCG into people on diets to target deep fat stores. He observed that this led to more weight loss than dieting alone.
