Mary Elizabeth Parker, a young and brilliant student from a small farming and ranching village called Bridesville, nestled next to a beautiful lake and surrounded by mountains, far from the big cities, whose inhabitants, anchored in other times with austere customs, grant her a scholarship to study at an university. In Boston, the young woman chooses Pembroke Collage, one of the best universities in the country. An elite university where upper-class young people usually studied Mary Elizabeth Parker has never left her hometown of Bridesville nor, visited such a big city like Boston. For her, everything was new and different. Her problems begin on the very same day of her arrival, when her suitcase was stolen, along with all her belongings and university admission documents. At the university, she shares accommodations with another African-American scholarship student. Because of her mannerisms and style of dress, she is constantly insulted, harassed, abused, and humiliated. She also suffered an attempted sexual and was also attacked and seriously injured with a baseball bat. All this because posh college students, regardless of gender, do not want scholarships to be awarded at that university to young people outside their social status. Days before the end of the academic year, Mary Elizabeth Parker and her roommate Jocelyn Johansson are expelled from the university with the intention of preventing them from earning their degrees.
