Overview

How can a specific part of our body speak for ourselves? What anatomical part makes us all part of the same human family and yet mark the biggest difference in who we are, what we do, the way we express ourselves and how we operate into the world? Paolo Rubini's Hands On is a photographic mosaic of 50 pictures, assembled from 25 countries, across 6 continents and over 5 years of time. It's a journey across the world into human nature and culture, set to address these questions with a unique focus, while casting a curious and tender light on what makes us each unique. It's a journey made for the hands, with hands and told through hands. A hands on journey.

Reviews

""There's a moment in the darkroom, as the deepest black emerges on your photo paper in the developer bath, when a quiet joy settles in. Paolo Rubini's black-and-white work evokes the spirit of timeless photography-anchored in the techniques of the past but undeniably alive in the present. Yet, it's not merely about the quality of the image; it's about the story it tells. And Paolo Rubini's story is a seamless one, rich in depth and emotion. This series hits the head and the heart."" - Lung Liu -

Author Information

Paolo developed his passion for photography while travelling through different countries throughout his early twenties. Fascinated by the opportunity to capture elements of different cultures - or moments of unusual beauty hidden in everyday life - he later was inspired to move toward a more personal and intimate perspective of reality. With this approach, he started to explore the possibility of composing images with a deeper conceptual impact, whilst reflecting his own emotional landscapes and visual art influences more clearly. Before moving from Italy to Vancouver, Canada, where he currently lives, Paolo attended several photography intensive courses in Mexico City and New York City. He now continues to develop his style, shooting freelance in North America and focusing mostly on projects spanning conceptual photography, urban photography, environmental portraiture, and still life. His current work explores the relationships human beings form with their environments, and the usage of panning techniques and long exposure to capture time, motion and urban feelings. When travelling Paolo still enjoys capturing the essence of different cultures with a photo journalistic approach that borrows from the aesthetic of the film photo-reporter Masters of the past century. Rubini has been a featured artist of Time Frame Gallery and has been previously in the roster of Fast Frames and Davie Art, all establishments located in Vancouver, Canada. His work has also been showcased in solo or group exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Minneapolis, Athens and his hometown Mantua, Italy. His latest projects were exhibitions in Vancouver and include ""Stillness in Motion"", ""At the seaside"", ""Pulse with life"" and ""Light paints"". His latest long-spanning project ""Hands On"" has been featured by Vancouver's Capture Photography Festival, 2019 and selected by Toronto's Contact Photography Festival, 2022.
