Overview

When my child was taken from my everyday life-everything I defined myself as-instantly collapsed-vanished-yet a teary eyed telephone call woke me up and literally snapped me back and into a realization that there was still someone who put their unconditional faith and trust in me-their daddy -for that little person on the phone only wanted a daddy's promise to do three basic things; i)always be honest;ii)always be there; and iii) tell bedtime stories. The very same things, it occurred to me, my parents gave to me. When my child was 13, I made two promises. First I would write a book for weekend Dads just showing them how we got through those difficult years. Second, I would write a book of the bedtime stories I told. This is the first of those promises. It doesn't lecture, it doesn't point fingers. It just tells dads, I've been there, and survived-and may it be a simple, positive group of ideas that could help any Dad.

This book helps fathers focus on the things that will build a rich, lasting, lifetime relationship with their kids by supplying concrete simple ideas (love is not complex), guidelines and reminders. Best of all, it comes from someone who lived what he offers to other dads facing similar situations. (Five Star) I read this book a couple of years after going thru a divorce and picked up some great tips on things to do with my young boys and ways to handle different situation that arise. It made me feel good too that I was already doing some things mentioned and am on the right track. I gave the book to a friend of mine that at the time his separation was very fresh and he was just having his first sole visits with his daughter. The book helped him immensely (I wish I had it when mine was fresh), enough so that his wife saw how he was stepping up and it got them back together! Its a quick enjoyable and important book for those of us that are weekend dads! (Five Star) A self published author who comes across as a parent who is sincere about his child's welfare. He tries to get the reader to overcome the bickering and realize they have this little life in their hands. He stresses the importance of getting over the divorce and moving on. His advice is from the heart. He appears to be a truly good person who doesn't let his noncustodial status get in the way of raising his child. I highly recommend this book. It's a bit pricey but then again, his advice is priceless. (Five Star) From simple tips to the more complex philosophical, this handbook offers a wealth of information for single parents in an easy to read format. You can use it as a reference guide, trying out any one of the 60 ideas or read it cover-to-cover. If you do the latter, you are sure to return to reference the authors great concepts (and even recipes). I'm giving these away to several of my single parent friends. (Five Star) Immediately after I read this handbook, I contacted the author and told him that I think it should be reread at least once a year. Parents only get one chance and most of us are amateur parents. Dads (and grandparents, and noncustodial parents) would benefit from regularly reading this handbook. (Five Star)

Author Information

Jerome Mark Antil is the seventh child of a seventh son-of a seventh son. Born at sunrise it's been told by Mary Holman Antil and Michael C. Antil Sr., that he was the first of eight siblings to stay awake all day and sleep through the night from the moment he was born. I remember the Pearl Harbor attack announced on our Zenith radio before I could walk. I heard Edward R. Murrow reporting the War from London... and the scratchy battle-weary ship-to-shore Morse code messages on radio while my diaper was being changed. Heartfelt fare of family and friendship-light-hearted nostalgia from the 1940s and 1950s are his favorite subjects. He revels at capturing in good detail what it was like being a kid living in a world at War and its long shadows. When the War ended, he grew up in Delphi Falls, which provided the setting for The Pompey Hollow Book Club and The Book of Charlie. My dad was a baker from the 1929 Great Depression through the post-War 1950s. As a young boy, I'd ride with him all throughout central and northern New York visiting grocers and U.S. Army bases; baseball parks and bread lines as he sold his bread, hot dog buns, pies and cakes. My Dad was 'Big Mike' and I loved listening to his timeless stories and tall tales-stopping at fishing holes along the way. All day rides with Big Mike-his Buick my Steamboat-his grand stories and an entire world at War my Mississippi. As an adult Jerry worked as a proof reader and printer's liaison, he later wrote and produced industrial sales and training films. An accomplished writer for public relations and advertising agencies, he would become Chief Marketing Officer for several prominent U.S. companies.Jerry's favorite authors are: (John Steinbeck) Steinbeck could peer through a peephole of a person's soul. (Ernest Hemingway) Grandpa Hemingway could establish character in a single sentence. (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) His Sherlock would keep me as eager for the next clue and accompanying anecdote as for the crime'ssolution. (Mark Twain) Samuel Langhorne Clements was an irreverent observer of human foibles. His stand up was thought provoking, deceptively caustic-he was the Howard Stern of the 19th century.
