OverviewWith evocative prose, watercolours, and family photographs, Jerry Stelmok recalls a childhood spent on Maple Hill Farm, a 200-acre plot nestling in the wilderness of Maine. His essays recall the family farm presided over by a Lithuanian grandfather who clung to Ninteenth-century practises - including two draft horses as the farm's only source of power! It is a world of constant wonder - 40 cattle, all know by name, 3,000 tomatoe plants grown for market, firewood chopped from the woodlots - a sun-dappled farm who's true magic was not in the idylicc surroundings, but in the lovinghome that his parents created despite lives of seemingly endless work, a touching, poignant tribute to an idylic childhood and one that will remain with the reader long after the book is finished. Stelmok has authored several books on wood-and-canvas canoes, including The Art of the Canoe with Joe Seliga"" (MBI, 2002) and ""Not Your Average Bear & Other Maine Stories"" (Tilbury House, 2007).
