Overview

This superb hardcover volume - upgraded with colour plates - celebrates the work of three legendary Victorian-era artists: Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, and Walter Crane. Each is spotlighted in separate sections filled with magnificent illustrations and an insightful text that explores their philosophies and methods. Additionally, the subjects were directly involved in the creation of this rare publication: in fact, Crane wrote his own profile, making his chapter a primary source for research. Author Information

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98) was an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and a close friend of William Morris's from their days as Oxford undergraduates. In addition to his painting and stained glass work, Burne-Jones worked closely with Morris in the area of decorative arts and illustrations.Polymath William Morris (1834-96) was a prolific writer of novels and essays as well as a translator of medieval texts. Although best known in his lifetime as a poet and social activist, Morris is chiefly remembered today for his designs, which he issued from his highly successful decorative arts firm. He also founded the Kelmscott Press, which he dedicated to the hand-printing of a select number of beautiful books with the highest standards of typography, printing, and craftsmanship. A native of Liverpool, Walter Crane (1845-1915) was the son of a lithographer and painter who achieved early success with his color illustrations for children's books. He ranks among the most important book illustrators whose works bridge the period between wood-engravings and four-color reproductions.
