OverviewThis book is different. It comes from the direction of life experience of living with schizophrenia whilst being in the British Army. It explodes the taboo of mental illness and lays open the entrails of how it feels to live life under the shackles of schizophrenia. But it is not just a tale of survival, it also shows humour. It tells of a strong, fit and boldly self-confident paratrooper who's life is changed irrevocably by the late onset of this crippling illness while still serving in an elite fighting regiment. The story tracks the insidious development of the illness and the extraordinary reaction of the British Army. Far from understanding and recognising his delusions and outrageous behaviour as symptoms of something serious, he is assessed as bad rather than mad and punished. The true story tells of his eventual discharge from the service, incarceration and almost immediate sectioning in several mental hospitals. His escapes and struggles and attempts to end his illness at his own hand. This book should be read by student clinicians both civilian and military and stand as a reference work of how not to treat soldiers that show signs of mental illness. Although the author is not a professional writer, the book is extremely readable, a fascinating insight into schizophrenia.
