Overview

Over the last two decades, we have witnessed a sea change in the nature of activism: NGOs, and social movements are increasingly networking, coordinating action, launching campaigns, petitioning, lobbying, protesting, and framing their demands and visions at the international level of contention. This new study examines why and how this has come about and explores the special role of the World Social Forum. This is also the first comprehensive study of eight key transnational protest networks: Jubilee Network, Our World Is Not for Sale, Via Campesina, ATTAC, Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions in Order to Aid Citizens, Friends of the Earth International, World March of Women, Peoples' Global Action and General Assembly of the Anti-War Movement. It shows how these growing transnational networks have even forged a unique and autonomous space, the 'World Social Forum', in which to deepen and broaden their transnational ties and collective visions for building 'other possible worlds' beyond neoliberalism.; This important new volume is based on participant observation and over 100 tape recorded interviews at WSF and European Social Forums, print and electronic literature on activist networks and protest events, e-mailed questionnaires, and culling scholarly and activist literature on globalization, transnational civil society, social movements theory, and activism against neoliberal globalization and militarism.
