Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor Information"Tom Barker's apprenticeship in American Flyer (AF) repair work began when he was eleven. He had found a 342 in an after Christmas Sale at the E. W. Edwards Department Store in Rochester, NY. The engine was broken - it had been purchased at half price of course because of its condition - and he set out to make it run. And run it did. Around 1972 Tom's interest in AF revived when he discovered that The A. C. Gilbert Company had gone out of business. He then began to acquire engines, rolling stock and accessories and by 1973 found himself building an extensive layout for his equipment. He also began to write the ""Roundhouse"" column for S Gaugian magazine and then became involved in other AF writing projects (a price guide and a repair guide). When not in the Roundhouse Tom worked as a Project Leader with Xerox's Reprographic Technology Department and taught Statistics at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He has a BS in Photographic Science & Engineering and a Masters in Applied Statistics from RIT. Tom is now retired, and contributes to AF knowledge through his web site and his books."
