Overview

"Getting Gigs Outside of the Concert Hall: A Guide For Mallet Percussionists, is a musical resource for mallet and auxiliary percussionists who want to find and make more live performance opportunities for themselves. But the business and live sound sections of this book can truly be used by any musician trying to play more local and regional gigs. Author and artist ROSiE CQ (Rosie Cerquone) is a vibraphonist-singer-songwriter. Trained as a classical and jazz percussionist, Rosie quickly realized after graduating with a music performance degree in 2020 that there isn't a lot of representation of mallet percussion within the music performing world-especially within pop music styles. Outside of being in an orchestral percussionist, a jazz vibraphonist, or a music theater percussionist, there are rarely any mallet players. But why? Mallet instruments pair beautifully with other instruments, as well as being great solo instruments. They are hard to move around, but so are drum sets. So instead of seeing the lack of mallet performers in the popular music world as a sign to not try and perform, Rosie taught herself the necessary skillsets to self-book her own performances as a true DIY musician. And with everything she has learned, she has self-booked over 130 performances for herself within three years as a solo instrumental vibraphonist, a vibraphonist-singer, a bandleader, and auxiliary percussionist. And now she wants to share everything she's learned with other musicians, specifically mallet percussionists, who want to use their talents and perform more! This book is broken into three main sections: The Music, The Business, and The Gear. The Music dives into how to choose what kind of music you would like to perform and how to learn how to play songs that don't have sheet music arrangements through learning how to comp chords. It also includes a section on the value of being an auxiliary percussionist in a band or small group. The Business explores how to actually get gigs through various channels. This section includes email, social media, and phone call templates for how to reach out to potential music venues, a content strategy for the social media adverse, explains what an EPK is, and tells you how to get people talking about you (in a good way!) And The Gear includes a vocabulary list for people with little to no training in live sound, explaining terminology in easy to understand definitions you'll come across when looking to invest in sound equipment, and gear lists depending on your performance goals as a performing percussionist. This book was created with the intention of helping the thousands of people who have studied mallet percussion and own an instrument, but don't think there are any opportunities for them to perform. People want to hear marimba and vibraphone, but they just don't even know it exists! About the Author: ROSiE CQ (Rosie Cerquone) graduated from the University of Montana in 2020 with a BM in Percussion Performance and a minor in Media Arts. Rosie performed one of her original songs, ""House,"" at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2021 as a featured artist. Rosie is proudly sponsored by Marimba One and BlueHaus Mallet Shop. In addition to being a vibraphonist-singer-songwriter, she is also a private teacher, educator, and regularly subs in regional orchestras throughout the Inland Northwest. She is currently based in Spokane, WA."
